HUMAN FACTORS DESIGN HANDBOOK: INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES FOR THE DESIGN OF SYSTEMS, FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT, AND PRODUCTS FOR HUMAN USE. SECOND EDITION

The main purpose of this handbook is to provide a general reference to key human factors questions and human-product interface design suggestions in a form that engineers and designers can utilize with a minimum of searching or study. The handbook has five chapters. Chapter 1, Systems, gives human factors data needed for major systems initial planning. It contains planning models and checklists that address important human factors concerns. The transportation systems considered are automobiles, trucks, recreational vehicles, public transit buses, intercity buses, commercial aircraft, railway vehicles, special transit vehicles, and streets/roads/highways. Chapter 2, Subsystems, contains human factors data for specific subsystem layout and preliminary design. Among the Subsystems considered are vehicular doors/hatches/windows, parking, walkways, moving walkways, vehicle operator work stations, restraint systems, and lighting. Chapter 3, Component and Product Design, provides detailed figures, charts, and tables of human factors standards required to design specific hardware items. Design specifics cover items including computers, hand tools, furniture, road signs, and extensive controls and displays lists. Chapter 4, Human Data, contains information on human characteristics and human capabilities. It covers human size, information processing capabilities, reaction times, strength, vision, and hearing. The chapter contains the latest human factors anthropometric data developed for the military. Chapter 5, Human Engineering Methods, gives information on how to conduct a human factors engineering program from the systems analysis stage to final design. The chapter discusses analytical techniques and gives detailed examples. The chapter also contains a detailed section on how to use mockups and models effectively. Following Chapter 5 are references and resources for further human factors information and help. Included is a metrics section with handy engineering unit conversions tables and scientific constants. An index is provided.
