The Network Information System (NIS) is a computerised highway management system which holds information about the condition, usage and future plans for the national (trunk) road network in England. It has been designed by the Department of Transport to assist in the strategic management of that network and in the planning of new works and major maintenance operations. It stores information, generally in a summary form, relating to traffic flow, accident details, condition data, construction, maintenance and road layout. This paper provides an overview of NIS and its development. (TRRL)
