HAVE THE BUSES CAUGHT UP? A REVIEW OF PASSENGER INFORMATION SINCE DEREGULATION

This report on passenger information is a follow up to the National Consumer Council's (NCC) report entitled Catching up with the bus' (see IRRD 283229) which was published prior to bus deregulation in 1985. In this report a review is made of the bus industry since deregulation. Firstly the legal framework created by the ennabling legislation, the Transport Act 1985, and the financial constraints on the bus industry are outlined. Chapters cover: the approach and practice of bus operators; the policy and approach of local authorities; results from BusWatch reports between June 1989 and March 1990, and a new survey carried out in January and February of 1990 of passenger experiences. Some conclusions and recommendations are presented. Information and publicity of bus services is seen as an important factor in promoting use of bus services. (TRRL)
