ENERGY TECHNOLOGY CHOICES: SHAPING OUR FUTURE
This assessment responds to a request by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the House Committee on Government Operations, and the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to provide an evaluation of the technical risks and opportunities facing our Nation's energy future. The report provides a broad overview of energy choices facing the Nation. While the report covers all aspects of energy use, specific sections address the transportation sector. Opportunities for energy efficiency improvements in the transportation sector are examined in the areas of automobile efficiency, heavy truck efficiency, aircraft efficiency, and alternative fuels. Also examined are the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards and potential energy demand reduction from new vehicles, public transit, improved maintenance and traffic flow, and ridesharing. The final chapter addresses policy options.
