Vehicle fuel economy is of prime concern in the 1976 model cars, ranging from full-size to sub-compact. What is yet to be exhibited, however, is how important this fuel economy aspect is in relation to vehicle performance. Both of these aspects were first affected in the 1969 models as a result of emissions controls and safety requirements. By 1974, fuel economy had decreased 22% and performance 11%. As of 1975 however, the trend has been reversing, with the design emphasis on fuel economy. The 1976 models then, will feature even more refinements while remaining within the emissions regulations: e.g., lower rear-axle ratios, reduced automatic transmission torque converter ratios, four-and-five-speed transmissions. With all these changes being implemented in this year's models, there doesn't seem to be much choice left for the designs of 1977.
