IMPROVED SHIP HANDLING IN ROUGH WEATHER THROUGH HULL SURVEILLANCE

The rough weather problem for ships and a method to reduce this problem is considered in this paper. Based on an extensive fullscale measurement project on M/S TAIMYR, a simple hull surveillance system consisting of few and reliable components is proposed. The system, which gives a general picture of the load level in the hull, is based on measured longitudinal stresses midships and the vertical acceleration of the bow. The statistically analyzed results are displayed on the bridge. The proposed system has been produced and successfully put to use on several ships.
