COMPARISON OF SOME LIFTING BRIDGE METAL DECKS

COMPARAISON DE QUELQUES TABLIERS METALLIQUES DE PONTS LEVANTS

The authors recall the present role of lifting bridges. The decks of this type of bridge are always designed mainly for compactness and light-weight. The weight influences the counterweights, suspension cables and lifting devices. The compactness mimimizes the effect of the wind during lifting. The thickness of the deck is also designed to be reduced to a mimimum to ensure a maximum free height for ships. This is why steel is most often selected for this type of structure. Details are given of existing bridges, some of which having orthotropic decks others being of the beam-under-carriageway type. A table shows the main characteristics of the bridge decks of the lifting bridges over the Bruxelles Canal. Attention is drawn to the fact that the designs used for lifting bridges can be utilized for larger-span bridges where steel is used in conjunction with reinforced and precast concrete. /TRRL/
