RAILWAY NOISE: ANNOYANCE INDICES. OBJECTIVE 1: SELECTION OF NOISE INDICES

INDICATEURS DE GENE DUE AUX BRUITS FERROVIAIRES. OBJECTIF 1: SELECTION DES INDICES ACOUSTIQUES

Research initiated by the French Ministries for Transport and the Environment aimed at assessing and predicting annoyance due to rail traffic noise for people living by railway lines is described. Four separate areas were involved: a) sampling of the views of 700 residents; b) recording of noise at the faces of buildings; c) establishment of new noise indices; and d) validation of these indices with reference to a). This report is concerned with the third activity and aims to overcome the inadequacies of indices described by the TGV Atlantique Study. Measurements were taken at 2 second intervals over a 24 hour period at 45 locations. 8h-20h Leq values ranged from 60 dBA to 70-73dBA and type of rail traffic varied. Four periods of time were defined: 24 hours, day, evening and night. The parameters considered are described and vary with the time of day. The indices considered to overlap were discarded, the remaining ones being expected to correlate best with the results of the survey of residents by railway lines.
