TRANSPORT STATISTICS REPORT. ROAD LENGTHS IN GREAT BRITAIN 1988-1989

This bulletin presents detailed road length figures giving sub-divisions of the Great Britain (GB) totals by road class, county and local authority for the years 1988-1989. Statistics of road lengths in England are collected annually from local highway authorities for roads which are their responsibility. The Department of Transport (DTp) keeps its own record of roads which are the responsibility of the Secretary of State. The Scottish Development Department and the Welsh Office collect their respective data which the DTp incorporates into its database to produce data for the whole of Great Britain. The data relates to the length of public highways maintainable at the public expense, as defined in Section 36 of the Highways Act 1980. Data is not included on road lengths in Royal Parks. (TRRL)
