AESTHETIC APPRECIATION OF THE ROAD. AN EMPIRICAL APPROACH. RESULTS OF RESEARCH. REPORT II

ESTHETISCHE BELEVING VAN DE WEG. EEN EMPIRISCHE BENADERING. ONDERZOEKS-RESULTATEN. RAPPORT II

In an experiment using films of two road environments, one in Drenthe and one in the Flevopolder in conditions of day-night and busy-quiet traffic, 64 subjects were asked to judge these environments with 16 constructs using a 6-point rating scale. This Road Environment Judgement Scale (In Dutch: BWO) was the result of three previous experiments. In the present experiment the findings of the previous experiments were replicated. Factor analysis resulted in a three factor solution, identical to the earlier results. Therefore, the factors were again named "hedonic value", "activation" and "perceptual variability". The Drenthe road environment was more appreciated than the Ppolder road environment, it had a more stimulating and a higher perceptual variation value. Furthermore it appeared that the Polder road environment lead to a less constant judgement of evaluatuion, activation and variation than the Drenthe road environment; thus, even on film, the Polder road does not support a constant positive appreciation, which in case of daylight and quiet traffic, may induce a suboptimal activation level, and hence a too low attention level. The judgement of road environments with the BWO appeared again to enable a clear differentation in appreciation between the two road environments. For part I see IRRD 825762.
