The results are reported of studies on an expansive cement prepared by blending portland cement, calcined metakaolinite and calcium sulfate. A hypothesis has been proposed for the mechanism of expansion associated with formation of ettringite. In a discussion of the hypothesis, attention is drawn to work that should be considered in evaluating the hypothesis; another mechanism is also proposed. A research effort relating to properties and type of K expansive cement of pure components, proposes a mechanicsm of ettringite formation in unrestrained paste of pure component. This involved a study of the reaction of an expansive cement paste which consisted of compounds in proportions required by the equation: C4A3S + 8CSH2 + 6CH + 71H = 3(C3A.3CS.31H).
