THE PEDESTRIAN AND CITY TRAFFIC

In this book, the author provides a historical review of the development of ideas (especially in street design) to protect the pedestrian, and offers solutions to urban transport problems. Reference is made to practice in France and the USA, but much of the book is concerned with the German and British approaches. The main theme of the book is how to provide for urban pedestrians, by traffic calming measures. The treatment of the book is chronological. It covers: the history of pedestrianisation and other protective measures and policies before the second world war; street planning in Germany and Britain from the nineteenth century to the beginning of this century and the appearance of the car; British and German garden city movements; urban road transport in the USA and its influences upon Europe; motorisation and street layout; the British approach to urban road transport and pedestrianisation from the 1940's to the 1960's; the development of transport policies; the concept and development of the idea of traffic calming; protecting pedestrians and residents from motor traffic: the last two decades of transport planning in Britain.
