INLAND WATERWAY TRANSPORT IN ECMT COUNTRIES TO THE YEAR 2000: A NEW DIMENSION

This report describes the current state of the infrastructure of the inland waterways in Europe. Statistics of traffic along them are also provided. Chapter 2 puts forward some explanations for the declining interest in the sector and attempts to highlight those features which need to be studied in order to ensure a safe future for inland waterway transport. Chapter 3 is concerned with infrastructural constraints, such as bottlenecks, and possibilities for improvement. Chapter 4 addresses the key problems associated with the waterway transport market as a whole. Chapter 5 and 6 focus on a number of important problems which are specific and relevant to certain traffic arteries, especially the Rhine-Maine-Danube link and the North-South markets. Tables are provided for each ECMT (European Conference of Ministers of Transport) country of: a) freight transport statistics by transport mode; b) road, rail and waterway network lengths; c) vessel capacities and fleet composition; d) numbers of scrapped vehicles; e) inland waterways good transport for 1977; f) trends in traffic flows; g) investment in transport infrastructure; and h) lengths of inland waterways.
