PRESENT STATUS AND APPLICATIONS OF GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS

This paper outlines the present status of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, defines various terms that are used with GPS, and lists possible applications and the equipment that is suitable for those applications. The two major applications of GPS technology are static positioning (stationary receiver) and kinematic positioning (moving receiver). Potential applications for Alberta Transportation are identified, including surveying (static application), navigation, automatic vehicle location and route guidance systems (kinematic applications). It is recommended that Alberta Transportation acquire a GPS receiver and explore the potential applications of the technology within various areas of the department. (Author/TRRL)
