This is a discussion of the SHRP's use of the falling weight deflectometers to evaluate and monitor the structural properties of the pavement test sections studied in the Long Term Pavement Performance experiments. SHRP'S efforts to develop a calibration methodology for the FWDs is described. The FWD is described, as well as its advantages over other deflection testing devices. SHRP's goal is to establish a SHRP FWD Calibration Center in association with one state highway agency in each of the four SHRP regions. The principal behind the calibration process is - compare the measurements from the FWD made under conditions approximating those which occur in the field to independent measurements of the same responses. The calibration system addresses both the FWD load cell and the deflection measurement devices. The load cell calibration is described, as well as the process for the deflection measurement devices (geophones).
