ALKALI-SILICA REACTIVITY PROBLEMS FROM THE STATE PERSPECTIVE. STRATEGIC HIGHWAY RESEARCH PROGRAM PRODUCTS. PROCEEDINGS OF A SPECIALTY CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE HIGHWAY DIVISION OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS AND THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION. DENVER MARRIOTT CITY CENTER HOTEL, DENVER, COLORADO, APRIL 8-10, 1991
Experience with alkali-silica reactivity problems in California is described. In 1984 California stated observing problems in Ventura county, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Pozzolans were therefore required on all existing Caltrans projects and a testing program on all aggregate sources was implemented. For existing structures, repair strategies depend on the degree of disintegration. If structures containing reactive aggregate are identified before damage occurs, attempts are made to seal the structure from moisture, thus preventing the alkali reaction. Silane is used as sealer. If cracking has already begun, then a high solvency sealer, such as high molecular weight methacrylate is used both to bond the cracks together and to seal out moisture.
