The nature of alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) is described. As part of the SHRP Project 'Eliminating or minimizing alkali-silica reactivity,' a questionnaire survey was made to determine the extent of, and circumstances surrounding, possible ASR in highway structures in 44 states. The results of the survey and subsequent field investigations revealed that state agency personnel are not familiar with the symptoms of the ASR such as the nature of the resulting differential volume changes, and requirements for expansive ASR to occur. A handbook has now been developed to assist in its recognition by personnel assigned to inspect highway structures. The handbook contains color photographs and a technique to identify the alkali-silica gel reaction product. The latter procedure utilizes uranyl acetate treatment of the concrete and fluorescence of the gel reaction product under ultraviolet light.
