VEHICLE/HIGHWAY AUTOMATION. TECHNOLOGY AND POLICY ISSUES. SUPER SMART SIGNS. SAE FUTURE TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE, AUGUST 7-10, 1989, VANCOUVER, CANADA

"Super Smart Signs" offer a powerful means for increasing freeway traffic flow. The approach is based on the idea of providing carefully chosen dynamic information to drivers in order to modify their behavior in ways which will smooth and speed traffic flow, and if possible, reduce accident rates. From a theoretical perspective, the concept is based on influencing behavior so as to modify the statistical characteristics of the "point processes", which are observed to characterize traffic flow. This paper outlines the approach conceptually, and then enumerates research tasks which will need to be accomplished if a SUPER SMART SIGN demonstration project is to be implemented.
