MANAGEMENT OF THE BRIDGE STOCK OF A UK COUNTY FOR THE 1990S. BRIDGE MANAGEMENT. INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, ASSESSMENT AND REPAIR. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BRIDGE MANAGEMENT, UNIVERSITY OF SURREY, GUILDFORD, MARCH 28-30, 1990

The aim of this paper is to show how Surrey County Council has developed a bridge management system in order to improve control of the stock of structures so that optimum use is made of resources and the overall condition is enhanced. Prior to 1980, the bridge management system in Surrey was not electronically based, however the increase in the number of structures consequent upon the opening of the M25 London orbital motorway, led to the development of STREG in 1980. STREG is a computer management system which stores information on individual structures. It is a batch system which generates standard or ad hoc reports as required. Inspection forms are prompted to a predefined programme, completed on site, returned, maintenance work decided, prioritised and programmed. Maintenance lists are then produced. A newer system is under development, BRIDGIT. The use of data capture devices will enable site inspections to be recorded electronically on site. It will be an interactive system, with information included on material type suppliers, location maps linked to the road networks. A quantative measurement of the conditions of the individual and total bridge stock will be obtained. Future development of BRIDGIT, includes use of computer aided design, and distance data access.
