SAFETY ASPECTS OF MAINTENANCE, CLEANSING AND HEATING OF ROADS

GATUDRIFT UR TRAFIKSAEKERHETSSYNPUNKT-UNDERHAALL, RENHAALLNING, GATUVAERMNING

The article describes experiences obtained from the administration of streets and roads in Vaesteraas, a Swedish town. Street administration includes: road maintenance work under winter and summer conditions, street cleaning and street lighting. Work operations are described with their effect on traffic safety. The main problems are: uneven road surfaces, blocked street gullies and road culverts, poor visibility at crossings, snow/ice and poor lighting. A comparison is made between conventional street administration and a system with heated streets. Plastic heating coils connected to a district heating system are placed 10cm beneath the street surface and at a distance of 25cm from each other. The street surface is kept at 3-5 degrees C and the system has proved to work efficiently until air temperature reaches -10 degrees C. All together an area of 192,000 M2 is heated. Many advantages are gained and the only disadvantage is the operating cost which is 8-9 skr/m2 and year compared to 5-6 skr for the conventional method. Street heating can be economically justified today if traffic economy and safety, and improved accessibility in winter for handicapped individuals in particular is taken into consideration. /TRRL/
