THE BEHAVIOUR AND FAILURE OF PLAIN CONCRETE UNDER THE ACTION OF COMBINED COMPRESSION AND TORSION. FRACTURE OF CONCRETE AND ROCK: RECENT DEVELOPMENTS. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, UNIVERSITY OF WALES, COLLEGE OF CARDIFF, SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, SEPTEMBER 20-22, 1989

This paper reports the results of the investigation on 35 hollow, concrete specimens tested under the combined action of compression and torsion to failure. Three series of specimens were tested at the University of Leeds and the University of Singapore under similar conditions. The results show that the presence of torsional shear stresses gives an apparent increase in the compressive strength of concrete. These tests were carried out as part of a programme investigating the behaviour of over-reinforced concrete beams which showed an increase in their load carrying capacity when subjected to combined bending and torsion as compared to pure flexure loading.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 829348.
