INSTRUMENTATION AND MONITORING ON TWO CUT-AND-COVER TUNNEL PROJECTS . TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION 90. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION 90 CONFERENCE, ORGANIZED BY THE INSTITUTION OF MINING AND METALLURGY, LONDON, 3-4 APRIL, 1990

This paper describes the instrumentation and monitoring of a section of the cut-and-cover tunnel at Bell Common and of a section of temporary sheet pile walls used to support the excavation for the cut-and-cover tunnel at Hatfield. The purpose of these studies was to improve understanding of soil structure interaction effects which would enable improvements to be made to current methods of design and construction. Instrumentation was installed to measure deformation and strain of secant and sheet pile walls, the propping and anchor loads, and movements, stresses and pore water pressures in the surrounding ground. Comparison of the results of monitoring the instrumentation with predictions of structural behaviour shows that the construction operations, in particular pile installation and extraction, exert considerable influence on the results.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828810.
