THE APPLICATION OF THE SPT IN WEAK SANDSTONE AND MUDSTONE ROCKS. PENETRATION TESTING IN THE UK. PROCEEDINGS OF THE GEOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS AND HELD IN BIRMINGHAM ON 6-8 JULY 1988
Standard penetration test results in sandstone and mudstone rocks are compared with results from geophysics, pressuremeter and laboratory testing. The findings indicate that the ratio of SPT stiffness to small strain shear modulus may be inversely proportional to the mass strength. Although the results should be used with caution, the application of standard penetration testing in weak rocks appears to assist in understanding the engineering behaviour of these materials.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828222.
