INTRODUCTION TO PAPERS 1-9. PART 1. PENETRATION TESTING IN THE UK. PROCEEDINGS OF THE GEOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS AND HELD IN BIRMINGHAM ON 6-8 JULY 1988

The implications of the ISSMFE proposed International Reference Test Procedure for UK practice are discussed. Although stricter adherence to procedures should improve the consistency and comparability of SPT results, the test, particularly in the preparation of the test section (i.e. the sample), is imprecise. Some of the causes of poor repeatability and reproducibility are examined. From these examples and from the conference papers comes further support for the approach to SPT analysis and characterisation of sands proposed by Skempton (1986). The usefulness of the SPT for soils and weak rocks which are hard to sample and test, emphasised by several conference papers, suggests the need for standardisation of testing and reporting procedures.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828222.
