WRITTEN DISCUSSION: EVALUATION OF A CLASSIFICATION SCHEME FOR WEATHERED ROCK. GEOMECHANICS IN TROPICAL SOILS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GEOMECHANICS IN TROPICAL SOILS, SINGAPORE, 12-14 DECEMBER 1988. VOLUME 2

The Geotechnical Control Office has recently published its "Guide to Rock and Soil Descriptions", mainly for use with the deeply weathered granite and acidic volcanic rock profiles of Hong Kong. For this purpose, a new scheme was devised to classify mass weathering zones. The background and evolution of this is described in the paper. The scheme comprises six zones, with four 'partially weathered' (PW) rock zones overlying 'unweathered' (UW) rock and covered by 'residual soil' (RS); the partially weathered zones are described simply in terms of the percentage rock as PW 0/30, PW 30/50, PW 50/90 and PW 90/100. In conjunction with the new scheme of weathering zones for characterizing mass properties, a system of six decomposition grades is used to describe rock material.(A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 820605.
