TRENDS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: ROAD DEVELOPMENT AND SAFETY, LUXEMBOURG, JUNE 1989

ORIENTATIONS DES RECHERCHES POUR L'AVENIR

This article puts forward arguments to show that research into traffic safety and road construction and design is necessary. Such research must be undertaken at all levels, and should include expertise from the psychological, sociological and economic disciplines. Research should cover the following areas: (1) the implementation of advanced techniques, (2) multidisciplinary integration, (3) rigorous technico-economic evaluation, and finally, (4) recommendation of means to preserve the road infrastructure. As traffic congestion increases, it is likely that social pressure for more efficiency and safety will also continue to increase. Innovations are necessary and expected in many fields of road transport. But the search for such innovations must not be anarchic. It seems necessary to give priority to the exploration and thorough examination of new methods. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828172.
