WHY PRIME . 5TH CONFERENCE ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA (CAPSA 89). PROCEEDINGS HELD IN SWAZILAND, 5-9 JUNE, 1989

It has become customary to prime the base course of a newly constructed pavement with a bituminous product prior to surfacing. Is this action still necessary? The paper summarises the considerations which most probably led to this tradition and discusses their present day validity. The difference between a prime coat and a curing membrane as well as their applicability is discussed. Finally, recommendations are made regarding the products to be used.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828827.
