BITUMEN-RUBBER ASPHALTS AND SEALS - A REPORT ON FULL SCALE APPLICATIONS . 5TH CONFERENCE ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA (CAPSA 89). PROCEEDINGS HELD IN SWAZILAND, 5-9 JUNE, 1989

This paper describes the material, mix charactersistics and practical issues relating to the design and construction of approximately 18000 tonnes of bitumen-rubber asphalt and 100000 sq metres of bitumen-rubber chip and spray seals used during the widening and improvement of National Route 3, Section 12 between Modderfontein and Buccleuch in South Africa. This work was done under contract NVK 312016 for the Department of Transport. The materials design implementing bitumen-rubber seal interlayers and bitumen-rubber overlays, was aimed at inhibiting reflective cracking from a cement-treated base. Certain experiences gained on subsequent contracts are also reported. This paper covers the so-called "wet process" where the rubber crumbs and bitumen are pre-blended at elevated temperatures and the resulting modified binder subsequently used as either a tack coat in chip and spray seals or for producing bitumen-rubber asphalts. Both bitumen-rubber asphalts and seals are performing well after three years in service and after having been subjected to 42000 equivalent light vehicles per lane per day.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828827.
