GROUND VIBRATIONS AND THEIR HARMFUL EFFECTS - THE INFLUENCE OF VIBRATORY COMPACTION EQUIPMENT
MARKSKAKNINGAR OCH DERAS SKADEVERKAN AV VIBRATIONER. INVERKAN AV VIBRERANDE JORDPACKNINGSMASKINER
The basic concepts concerning wave propagations in soils and rock are described together with a literature study on building damage caused by ground vibrations. Proposed limitations for harmful vibrations are given for different structures and vibration sources. The results of some of the investigations on the effect of vibratory rollers are presented in greater detail. Damage to buildings is seldom caused by vibratory rollers as anyone inside the buildings will be disturbed before buildings are endangered. As a rule of thumb, the safety distance to the endangered structure depends on the weight of the roller. For tandem rollers the heaviest roll is considered to be the design load. In case there are doubts about a suitable safety distance a vibrometer is recommended for determining the actual frequency and amplitude. After that the maximum particle-motion velocity can be calculated which seems to be the decisive parameter for harmful vibrations. This should not exceed 10 mm;sec. in the vicinity of residential and industrial buildings. See also IRRD abstract no. 214777. /TRRL/
