Evaluation of tunnel stability in rock conditions can be readily performed using the finite element method (FEM) of stress analysis. This paper is concerned with interpretation of the stress and displacement outputs of different tunnel profiles subjected to shallow depth conditions under gravity loading. Consideration is given to the effect of tunnel width on stress and displacement magnitudes. Discussion is focussed on the interpretation of stress and displacement data with respect to geological and rock strength aspects.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828810.
