STUDY OF THE PARTS AROUND THE COMBUSTION SPACES FOR IHI-SULZER RND TYPE DIESEL ENGINE-DEVELOPMENT OF CYLINDER LINER WITH NEW LUBRICATION

In the development of a large bore, slow speed marine diesel engine, it is very common to carry out various tests and inspections on a test bed to prove engine performance and reliability. It is, however difficult to confirm the reliability of the main components of the engine due to the limited period of use on the test bed. Especially the performance of the parts around the combustion spaces such as cylinder liner and piston ring can not be confirmed until after long endurance running of the engine in actual service has been experienced. As regards the Sulzer RND type diesel engine, piston ring breakage and piston-liner scuffing have sometimes occured after extended use; therefore many countermeasures have been tried by many companies to prevent damage of this kind. As a result of continuous research on this subject, extending over a long period, IHI has recently developed a cylinder liner with additional lubrication above the exhaust ports. This paper describes the purpose of the development, the processes of the test results of the liner with the new lubrication system.
