WORKERS' COMPENSATION. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT EXPERIENCE RATING

Experience rating rewards insureds with good loss experience and punishes insureds with bad loss experience by applying a credit (reduction) or debit (increase) to premiums determined by manual rates. All states (except those with monopolistic state funds) utilize intrastate experience rating. Experience rating is one of the ways in which the insurance industry reduces inequities in manual premium rating by rewarding insureds who control their losses and penalizing insureds who do not. This article reviews the experience rating process and suggests ways that it can be managed.
