This article discusses the results of a study by the Midwest Research Institute, that were reported in January 1989 at the Transportation Research Board annual meeting. Data shows that for the five year period 1981-1985 there were 13,547 reported on-highway hazardous materials incidents of which 1,427 (or about 11 percent) involved accidents. The article goes on to discuss the major causes of reported hazmat incidents, and the frequency of hazmat releases. The aforementioned study also contains important data of hazmat incidents broken down by vehicle type and cargo type.
