BOOSTING ASPHALT DURABILITY
Kokosing Construction Company Inc., Fredericktown, Ohio, is using 1 1/2-in. aggregate in the heavy base mix for a 7.6-mile-long reconstruction job on I-71 in Columbus, and is placing a 7-in. pavement in three courses for the mainline. Also, the asphalt mixes for the binder and surface courses of the right-hand lanes of the six-lane expressway will feature additional modifiers: Northbound, each ton of asphalt will include 7 1/2 lb. of polyester; southbound, each ton will have 6 lb. of polypropylene. The goal of these unusual mixes is to prevent rutting. Further details of the project are provided in this article.
