DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE SPECIAL CAST IRON BRAKE SHOES

This paper describes the development of high performance brake shoes made of a special cast iron which contains phosphorus, chromium, etc. The chemical composition of the shoes can be varied to make their performance match the operating conditions. The addition of phosphorus is useful for increasing the friction coefficient of cast iron shoes and the addition of chromium improves the stability of frictional performance and decreases the wear rate of cast iron shoes. These special cast iron shoes are now widely used in Japan.
