This article discusses the P*I*E Nationwide blueprint for quality which was born out of necessity after a 1983 merger of Ryder Truck Lines, Inc. and Pacific Intermountain Express. P*I*E was led to Statistical Process Control (SPC) and the Deming approach through meeting with one of their major customers, Rohm & Haas. Another major account (3M) had referred P*I*E management to a quality seminar at Crosby Quality College. The article details further ways in which P*I*E Nationwide cut down its error, instituted new software systems, and improved management and productivity.
