SEM ANALYSIS ON FRACTURE AND HEALING OF SAND-ASPHALT MIXTURES

Understanding of the mechanism of healing is important for the prediction of the fatigue life of asphalt concrete pavements. In this study, a replication technique for scanning electron microscsopy is used to study the process of fracture healing of sand-asphalt mixtures. The 3 binders studied are: Texaco AC-5; Texaco AC-20, and styrene butadiene rubber latex modified Texaco AC-5. The technique demonstrated the fracture patterns of the binders and showed the incompatibility of latex with Texaco AC-5. It was found that the degree of healing is dependent upon healing time and binder viscosity. A basis for modeling the healing mechanism of asphalt concrete was found in the initial surface penetration and structural bonding concepts.
