This paper reviews the various methods that have been proposed for proportioning columns in gravity-loaded frames, and explains their deficiencies. A new design method is proposed that does not make use of the column effective length factor thereby circumventing the problems that the latter creates in design. It employs a fictitious lateral load that is a fraction of the gravity loads. The method is applied to several unbraced steel frames, including those with leaning columns. Although approximate, it is sufficiently accurate for all practical purposes. The accuracy of the method is verified by comparison with known solutions.
