TAILINGS PROCESSED FOR BASE AND PAVING MIX
Frehner Construction Company, Inc., North Las Vegas, is processing about 950,000 tons of mine tailings to produce 750,000 tons of specification aggregate for a project at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The specially-blended aggregates include 500,000 tons of 1 1/2-in.-minus special base aggregate and 250,000 tons of 1 1/4-in.-minus aggregate for use in asphalt pavements. Federal Aviation Administration specifications require that all stone in both aggregates be essentially cubical in shape and have at least two fractured faces. This article provides details on the crushing operation, the special base blending, and by-products processing.
