PROCESSING WASTE ROOFING FOR ASPHALT COLD-PATCHES

Asphalt Recovery Systems, Inc. (ARS), Chicago, converts old asphalt shingles into paving products for patching potholes and improving haul roads. Department of Energy estimates show that about 10 million tons of roofing material waste is generated nationwide each year. About half a million tons come from the Chicago area alone. ARS has developed the procedure and equipment to process the waste roofing into two primary products: cold patch material and ARS chips. ARS chips are ground 1 1/2-in.-minus material which can be used as a paving product over a stone base, i.e., on haul roads or truck terminals. Further details of the waste recovery process are included in this article.
