MICROCOMPUTER STRUCTURAL MEMBER AND FRAME DESIGN BY LRFD

The paper describes a microcomputer-based, menu-driven system for the design of column beams and frames (beam-columns) using the LRFD format. The system is automated and supplemented with computer graphics to give the user a visual picture of the design. All programs are written in IBM BASIC and can be run conveniently using QuickBASIC. For the frame program, a methodology for the analysis and design of frameworks suitable for microcomputer application is implemented. The introduction of a second-order geometric stiffness matrix in the stiffness formulation and the treatment of in-span loadings in the analysis are of particular interest. In this method, the member forces and moments can be used directly for design, and the design is facilitated by the use of an automated section selection scheme that selects the lightest section that satisfies the LRFD provisions.
