BRITISH LIGHT RAIL PLANS PROLIFERATE

Progress is reported on light rail projects in 16 British cities. Most advanced are schemes in the North-west and Midlands. Track construction is due to begin on the Manchester Metrolink starting at Victoria and reaching Piccadilly via Piccadilly Gardens by the end of 1990. In Birmingham tenders are about to be called for the first line of the Midland Metro and discussions are underway with local authorities and representatives regarding details. A second Midland Metro bill is also before parliament. Schemes are also described in Sheffield, Bristol, Belfast, Cambridge, Cleveland, Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham, Reading, Southampton, Swindon, Portsmouth and Chester. Details are given of estimated costs, ridership, vehicles and routes where determined. In Southampton a shortlist has been drawn up of 4 enterprises capable of designing and operating their 'peoplemover'. Details are given of the preferred Briway system which uses rubber-tyred, electrically powered, air conditioned cars running at grade, underground or elevated.
