TRAFFIC AND AIR QUALITY PLANS FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

TRAFIK- OCH LUFTVAARDSPLANER FOER SOEDRA KALIFORNIEN

It is a well known fact that the environmental problems in Southern California are severe. In spite of traditionally relatively progressive measures in Los Angeles, the strong growth in economy and population has resulted in only marginal improvements. In order to deal with the problems in a more decisive way, and to meet requirements in the Californian as well as the federal legislation, a comprehensive and thoroughly evaluated Air Quality Plan has been adopted for the region. The measures of this plan address all pollution sources but special attention is given to transportation. Traffic emissions are, for instance to be reduced through altered vehicle use patterns and through the introduction of cleaner vehicle fuels. The comprehensiveness of the plan, and the boldness of its measures, has yielded a great interest in Sweden. This report concentrates on measures affecting the transportation sector, but all other parts of the plan are addressed as well.
