REALIZATION OF THE ORBITAL MOVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN LONDON - THE BEDDINGTON MITCHAM RELIEF ROAD PROPOSAL

The need for orbital movement in south-west London has been accepted for a long period of time. With the abandonment of the M23 extension, it was necessary to determine suitable alternative arrangements to meet local needs and realize development opportunities to the benefit of the local area and a wider sector of south-west London. Merton grasped this opportunity by identifying proposals in the local plan and progressing these under partnership arrangements with adjoining authorities and private sector land interests. The Paper describes the evolution of the road pattern and orbital movement policy, and sets out the proposals now being progressed for the Beddington Mitcham Relief Road (BMRR) between the A237 Carshalton Road and the A23 Purley Way.
