A RATIONAL INTERPRETATION OF PORE PRESSURE PARAMETERS

The aim of this Technical Note is to establish theoretical relationships between pore pressure parameters and some of the well established constitutive laws of soil skeleton which are based on the theory of plasticity. In this paper general expressions for the pore pressure parameters are derived. Substituting the characteristics of yield criterion, flow and hardening rules adopted in any elastoplastic constitutive law, dependence of pore pressure parameters on effective stress paths and loading histories can be readily worked out and compared with experimental results. Elastic, ideally plastic model of soil with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and critical state model are used as examples to illustrate the procedure involved. (A)
