AGGREGATES AND UNTREATED LAYERS

ARIDOS Y CAPAS NO TRATADAS

For a granular layer to be very permeable it must consist of gap graded material, without sand, and be free of fractions passing the no 5 UNE Siere. With specific reference to the drainage characteristics of untreated base and subbase layers, this illustrated article describes a laboratory procedure for determining the permeability coefficient of granular materials without any type of binder. An annual visual inspection of a test section (Madrid ring road south west) constructed with an untreated, drainage roadbase, has shown no structural defects or surface irregularities after three years of service.
