In this article, initiatives by various tyre manufacturers, to reduce tyre noise are outlined. New European vehicle noise emission legislation, as embodied in 84/424/EEC applies to vehicles manufactured on or after 1 October 1990 and first registered on or after 1 April 1991. Noise limits for cars, passenger vehicles and goods vehicles are given in tabular form. The permitted noise levels are decreased from the previous legislation 81/334/EEC, which came generally into effect in October 1983. Tyre noise is generated by a number of factors including the impact of the tread block on the road, the wind noise generated at the top of the tyre as well as road contact. The introduction of porous road surfaces would also reduce noise from vehicles.
