AN OVERVIEW OF MICROSILICA CONCRETE IN THE UK - PART 2 APPLICATIONS

This is the second part of an article describing the properties of microsilica concrete (MC) in the UK. MC is up to 50% stronger than OPC concrete with the same cement content. It is very effective at producing high compressive strengths, and it has excellent abrasion resistance. Because of its useful properties, it is being used for an increasing number of applications and contracts in the UK and around the world; nine British and seven overseas examples are mentioned. The remarkable properties of microsilica are imparted to the concrete only if its microspheres are properly dispersed. Most MC produced in the UK is at least as compact and easy to handle as conventional concrete. Evidence is provided to confirm the reduced free water content of MC; this content is a useful indicator of its effective dispersion. Although MC is not cheap, it provides good value for money. Worldwide sales of microsilica for the concrete industry are currently increasing by 30% per annum. The author concludes that, although there are potential problems in the production of MC by inexperienced manufacturers, customers can be confident of a consistent, high-quality product from those suppliers who have researched it sufficiently.
