TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT IN THE NORTH WEST

This article briefly reviews progress in transport investment plans for the North West from 1984 to date. It looks at the 1984 primary network review (PRN) for roads in Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside; the gradual change in planning attitudes from a local to a strategic outlook; the growing cooperation between local and central government transport officials, and the 1.8 billion planned expenditure on trunk roads in the region which was announced in the government white paper of May 1989, "Roads for prosperity". The paper also looks at recent improvements for rail, light rail and airport facilities in the North West.
