TORRIDGE BRIDGE: ERECTION OF SUPERSTRUCTURE
The design paper covers the principal concepts and general approach to the Torridge high level crossing, as well as the influence of the assumed method of construction on the design parameters. This Paper on construction serves to emphasize further the interdependence of design and construction during the manufacture and erection of the bridge superstructure. The handling and storage of precast segments is described with particular reference to the use of special lifting and handling equipment. Erection by the balanced cantilever method is explained in detail, including a description of the launching girder and its use. Reference is made to the temporary midspan joints, which were used to enhance the speed of erection. Problems of loading, stability and alignment are discussed. In the conclusions, the principal difficulties that were encountered are reviewed in order to assist those who may be engaged in work of a similar nature in the future.(A) See also IRRD abstracts Nos 829917-829918.
